The Alexir Partnership sponsor England Judo squad twins

The Alexir Partnership are very excited to be sponsoring twin brothers Oliver and Thomas Nash after both were called up to the England judo squad.

Alongside studying for their A levels at Oxted School, the 16-year-old brothers, who started out as beginners at Keisen Judo Club in East Grinstead six years ago, are both on the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence programme – a government-funded initiative that has been designed to help young people aged 16 to 18 combine education and sport.

And all their hard work is now paying off because in March they received their first Dan black belts and were both invited to join the England squad.

We look forward to cheering them on at the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Alexir Partnership Partner New Brand Sown & Grown to Disrupt Cereal Category

When the Alexir Partnership first met Great Little Grains it was clear that the Sown and Grown brand was born out of a desire to think differently. Their brief to Alexir was to think about the cereal category in a different way and to challenge the normality of the existing packaging formats, namely cartons and bags.

The pack format Great Little Grains wanted could not be easily packed by manufacturers but it was key to the brand as it would not only keep the freshness locked in but it would also disrupt the cereal category, creating stand-out and interest. Alexir were tasked with sourcing and packing a re-sealable tube to lock in the freshness of 100% British Grains.

The challenges were plentiful – at the time of the brief the Alexir contract packing division were a nut-free site and the tube had to be sourced from one of a network of potential suppliers. Fortunately, the management team saw this as an opportunity and with significant capital expenditure Alexir added nut co-packing to its services and partnered an exciting new brand into the marketplace. The Alexir Partnership is well-known for its expertise and knowledge of the packaging industry to guide new products from conception through to delivery. The tube format traditionally required a metal cap seal on its base but the sourcing team looked for a more cost-effective solution with no Capex to launch. They successfully tracked down a plastic base option for the tube that could be sealed with an impact adhesive. The manufacturing partner would supply the Granola and Muesli and Alexir would fulfil the rest of the project!Sown+Grown+low+res

In February 2016 the first batch of Granolas and Mueslis were expertly crafted in the heart of the English countryside using 100% British grains and packed in a re-sealable tube to lock in the freshness. The production and launch went without issue and the Sown and Grown brand now sits proudly in its tubes on the shelves in the Sainsbury’s cereal aisle.

‘Entering the competitive cereal category with a new brand required a unique point of difference. The use of the visually disruptive tube which when combined with the striking brand design gives the new Sown & Grown brand from Great Little Grains the opportunity to be noticed at the point of sale. Add in the functional benefit of the re-sealable tubes containing the fantastic new granola and muesli ranges and we believe we have identified a new and relevant proposition for cereal shoppers to enjoy. We have very much enjoyed our collaborative partnership with the Alexir team who have used all their expertise and knowledge to help progress this concept through to market readiness and in-store launch’.

Tom Tugendhat MP On Board With Local Carton Manufacturers In Edenbridge

Meeting takes place to discuss key issues for the UK Packaging Manufacturing Industry

Edenbridge, February 26, 2016– Tom Tugendhat, local MP for Tonbridge, Edenbridge and Malling, Kent, visits headquarters of the Alexir Partnership to hold a key meeting with Chairman Robert Davison and Dick Searle, head of the Packaging Federation.

MP Visit

Robert Davison said, “As well as being the Chairman of the biggest local company in Edenbridge I am also Chairman of the BPIF Cartons, the trade association for carton-converters in the UK.  We have been actively encouraging all of our members to engage with their local MPs in an effort to increase the number of active members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Packaging Manufacturing Industry (APPG). We are delighted that Tom Tugendhat, amongst other things, has agreed to become one of these.”

At a BPIF Cartons lunch in January Dick Searle of the Packaging Federation reiterated the need for members of the carton-converting trade association to engage with local MPs and encourage them to become active supporters of the APPG. The APPG meets to create a better understanding of the UK Packaging Industry and to address issues facing the industry from regulation and also to promote the UK as a centre of excellence for packaging manufacture. Once an MP becomes an active member of the APPG the extra support helps the committee discuss issues arising from the EU Circular Economy Package, EU Membership and Energy Policy (to name but three issues facing the industry).

The Packaging industry employs some 85,000 people in the UK, representing 3% of the manufacturing industry workforce and sales of £12billion. Its productivity is significantly higher than that of other industries’ average performance and it is a world leader in product innovation and manufacturing technology. The Packaging Federation and BPIF Cartons are united in their appeal for support to stop any further erosion in the UK manufacturing base and to ensure that packaging manufacture is recognized for its pivotal role in the supply chains.

The meeting held in Edenbridge on 26th February touched upon many of the key issues facing manufacturing businesses in the UK, especially in the uncertain times ahead of the EU referendum.

Tom Tugendhat MBE, MP for Tonbridge, Edenbridge and Malling said, “I am pleased to support Alexir, one of the most important businesses in Edenbridge. They provide good opportunity for employment and skills training locally. I look forward to supporting Alexir and the packaging industry in the future”.

Williamson Tea brand goes ‘Doy’ with The Alexir Partnership

doy

Williamson Tea is a fifth generation tea farming business committed to growing the highest quality sustainable teas to the benefit of Kenya, its communities, wildlife and environment. The Alexir Partnership have been successfully producing their stylish tea carton packaging on silver Metpol board for over 10 years and the brand has gone from strength to strength in Waitrose and on-line. At the beginning of last year the brand team at Williamson approached Alexir with a plan to expand their current loose tea and FUSO teabag range.

The challenge for Alexir as packaging specialists was to create a concept for the brand which enhanced product visibility on shelf but remained consistent with the existing range. With a network of worldwide manufacturing partners the Procurement team at Alexir have access to a multitude of packaging solutions for their customers. Their technical knowledge and working relationships with specialist packaging manufacturers around the globe culminated in the creation of a stand-up Doy pouch in a fittingly elegant design.

The Doypack-style stand-up pouch is extremely practical and robust packaging which is gaining in popularity for a broad range of products including skin care and cleaning products, tea, coffee, pet food, soups, sauces and confectionery. When compared to flat pouches with the same format, a greater filling volume can be achieved with this pouch type. In addition, the vertical stability of the pouch ensures ideal positioning and presentation at the point of sale. This popular stand-up pouch style is the most impressive driver in the flexible packaging market and addresses the needs of today’s market and the trends of tomorrow.

The design team at Alexir combined a laminated metalized PET and a natural PET material to create a re-closable stand-up pouch that keeps both bagged and fresh tea for longer. The front of the pack remained transparent for enhanced product visibility whilst the back kept its foil identity, in line with the rest of the range. The team at Williamson have been very pleased with the extension to the range and early rates of sale indicate the customer’s acceptance of the new packaging format. The Alexir Partnership is in an enviable position to be able to offer brand owners both short-run digital work ideal for new product launches and long-run gravure printing through their global manufacturing partners.

About the Alexir Partnership

The Alexir Partnership is always pushing forward and leads the way in innovation in the food packaging industry. Not only do they manufacture over 250 million cartons a year but they also have a specialist department (Alexir International) with staff in both the UK and China providing strategic global sourcing to help clients meet their ever-changing packaging needs.  In addition, Alexir also run a highly successful food co-manufacturing plant making them a unique ‘design to delivery’ packaging provider. Recent investment in new machinery at their co-manufacturing plant includes a Doy pack filling line, a high-speed horizontal form fill and a seal flow wrapping line. This capital expenditure further demonstrates the commitment of the Alexir Partnership to lead the way in innovation whilst meeting the needs of a rapidly changing marketplace.

Digital print for packaging – A trend in 2016

Digital influences are all around us and the world of digital print is growing with the total print market estimated to be worth over £610 billion by 2018. More photos have been taken in the last few years than the rest of time combined with demand for colour prints set to hit well over a trillion by 2020.

Digital print driving digital marketing

Using your digitally printed marketing as a tool to drive traffic to your website really increases visitor numbers and grows your sales, enabling you to react to new customer needs and frequent changes in the market. Customers use a vast range of printed products in tandem with their online presence.

Packaging itself will experience a significant transformation over the next few years as digital printing rises from niche applications and becomes the norm for packaging converters of all types. Digital printing is improving workflow, enabling innovative marketing and getting products to market faster than ever now.

In 2016 digital print is taking a firm grasp of the market as brand owners across the world invest significant resource and money into planning their digital packaging strategies. The technology now exists to create high quality packaging on a variety of substrates on digital presses. This year will see more digitally printed packaging on retail shelves than ever before.

The challenge still facing the brand owner community in 2016 is how they leverage this technology to drive profit from innovative marketing campaigns, how to use the power of digital print to build stronger relationships with their customers and how to gain loyalty from the new generation of shoppers.

What will make digital print so successful in 2016?

Digital print engages customers. Digitally printed packaging, if harnessed correctly, has the ability to grab and hold people’s attention in a way no other media channel can offer. Using technology such as Augmented Reality, QR codes and web-to-print solutions provide value alongside benefits such as short-runs and shorter lead times which give faster routes to market and the ability to react quickly to ever changing market conditions.
